TUKURAN, Zamboanga del Sur, April 3 (PIA) – The growing and nurturing of trees is now the focus of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), 1st Field (Beat ‘Em) Artillery Battalion, 1st Cavalry (Tagapanguna) Squadron, Philippine Army and Tactical Operations' Group (TOG-9), Philippine Air Force.
Recently, the KBP and stakeholders along with barangay officials went to barangay Tinotongan to assess whether the 500 mahogany seedlings planted during the ‘Oplan Broadcastreeing’ held on September 9, 2019 are alive.
Carrying hand tools such as bolo, shovel and scythe, stakeholders cleaned around the planted seedlings so that they would sprout and grow well.
Melchor Coronel, chairman of KBP, Zamboanga del Sur Chapter said stakeholders are now focusing on nurturing the planted seedlings to ensure the survival of the planted trees to preserve our Mother Earth.
“Grown seedlings can contribute to solving the problem of climate change because our environment can be preserved. I believe that the trees that are planted can provide shade and coolness to the environment and prevent landslides in the mountains,” Coronel said.
He added that almost every year, stakeholders plant trees in their adopted barangays but they do not know how many are alive and how many are dead.
Captain Arnel Andaya, S7 chief of 1FAB said that at the event, he saw the enthusiasm and excitement of the members of their unit along with the stakeholders looking for their planted seedlings.
Andaya said their unit strongly supports the tree growing activity because he sees the great benefits it has provided to our environment.
"We stakeholders don't just plant regularly, we really take care of the plants so that they grow and we don't waste our hard work on planting," Andaya added.
Punong Barangay Virginia Villaver said that their participation in the tree growing activity confirms their promise to join the said stakeholders in fulfilling their campaign regarding environmental preservation as some mountains are now denuded.
Villaver along with his barangay officials helped with the cleanup around their planted seedlings and she was very happy that her plants were alive and it was even taller than her.
In the assessment, it was found that out of the 500 seedlings planted, 260 of them are alive. (RVC/GCC/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
