LUDABI-Iligan commemorates quincentennial Battle of Mactan

ILIGAN CITY, Apr 28 (PIA)--Looking back on the historical happening in the country, the Lubas sa Dagang Bisaya, Inc. (LUDABI) - Iligan Chapter commemorated the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan Tuesday, April 27, with a grand program and a ceremonial wreath-laying at the Lapu-Lapu’s monument in Paseo de Santiago to honor his triumph in a remarkable fight against Ferdinand Magellan on April 27, 1521.

LUDABI National President Atty. Leo Zaragosa stressed that it is still significant for the citizens, especially Bisaya, to continue recalling and celebrating this event as this is a strong reminder of how Filipino ancestors won a battle against colonizers.

Pagpukaw kini, dili nato kalimtan kay talagsaon kaayo ning kaisog gipakita ni Lapu-Lapu,”  he said.

[We are celebrating Lapu-Lapu as a reminder that they should not be overconfident with Bisaya, we will fight with a dagger against a cannon. This is a wake-up call, we should not forget because this bravery shown by Lapu-Lapu is very rare.]

[With our remembrance of Lapu-Lapu, may we remember that before we die, each one of us is challenged to do a heroic act.]

Department of Energy Undersecretary Ben Ranque who also graced the event as a LUDABI member affirmed that the commemoration urges Filipinos to stand for their land whenever other nations try to colonize it again just like how early heroes fought for their country.

[Let us remember that it is right, there were no weapons in the time of Lapu-Lapu. That was just daggers against cannons and sharp swords of Spaniards but the Bisaya won. We, Filipinos, won against them. That is the reason why we should be brave when there is a threat of colonizing our country by other countries.]

Meanwhile, Zaragosa hoped that 100 years after the quincentennial commemoration of Lapu-Lapu’s victory, Filipinos would still celebrate his bravery in the Battle of Mactan and his legacy may be passed to future generations.

[We hope that in 2121, 100 years from now, 600 years of Lapulapu’s bravery will still be celebrated as these youths attending now, you will talk about this, you will be aware so that the awakening and urging uniqueness of our bloodline inspired by Lapulapu will still continue and the day will come that our bloodline will be prominent.] (CRG/ PIA-ICIC)
