Modernization of rice farming industries pushed in Davao Region

DAVAO CITY, April 28 (PIA) – The Technical Education and Skill Development Authority (TESDA) inspected the Villar Sipag Farm School in Barangay Communal, Davao City as part of TESDA’s main thrust in developing the agricultural sector – particularly the rice farming industry.

The said farm school is a joint effort between Senator Cynthia Villar as the chairperson for the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, the Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI), Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict for Region XI (RTF-ELCAC XI), and TESDA.

TESDA Director General Secretary Isidro Lapeña emphasized the importance of the Rice Tariffication Law through the training trainers to be able to equip the local rice farming industries with a competitive edge in terms of the global market.

“The purpose of the Rice Tariffication Law is to modernize the way we do things. Ang first-step diyan is to train the farmers [The first step here is to train the farmers] … But of course, we need to train trainers … We sent TESDA trainers to become trainers nitong mga farming methodologies, “ Lapeña said.

One of the recipients of the said TOT is the Agriculture Extension Worker of the Local Government Unit of Hagonoy Jorivee Roylo Lagaras and she is confident that the training will be beneficial to the skills and livelihood development for rice farmers in their municipality.

“We will share what we have learned here and the knowledge that was imparted to us especially on the mechanization and other modern technologies for rice farming so that we will develop the current rice farming practices of rice farmers in our municipality,” Lagaras said. (PIA XI/KPLCaro
