CagVal's COVID-19 cases now over 38,000

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, May 15 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) Region 2 has already recorded 38,092 cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections in Cagayan Valley Region as of writing. 

Dr. Ma. Angelica Taloma of DOH Region 2 said that of the total cases, 32,768 have already recovered and 4,423 are active cases, while there were already 889 deaths registering a 2.33 percent regional case fatality rate, which is higher than the 1.67 percent national case fatality rate.

She said that of the active cases, 98 percent have no travel history, while only 9 percent have travelled outside of the region and 2 percent have travel histories within the region. 

In terms of cumulative cases, Tuguegarao City remains as having the highest cases with 5,305, followed by Santiago City with 4,142 cases, and the City of Ilagan with 2,062 total cases. 

Tuguegarao City also topped the list of cities and municipalities with active cases registering 988 as of May 13, followed by Cauayan City, Isabela with 195, and Maddela, Quirino with 125 cases.

"Cases in Region 2 continuously exceed the expected number of cases in a seven-day period. A steep peak is observed from the first week of March to first week of April 2021," Taloma said. 

However, she stated that despite the increasing cases, the provinces and cities have registered "moderate" epidemic risk classifications except for the City of Ilagan which is classified as "low" risk, and Batanes province as "minimal" risk. Currently, there are no longer areas classified at the critical level. 

Taloma also presented that the regional health capacity utilization rate has improved as the total bed utilization rate fell under a moderate risk tag, while the mechanical ventilator utilization rate fell under low risk. 

She further said that Solano, Nueva Vizcaya; Tuguegarao City and Aparri in Cagayan; City of Ilagan, Santiago City, Tumauini, and Cabagan of Isabela; and Maddela, Quirino are the areas with identified as having community transmissions in the region. (JCK/OTB/PIA-Cagayan)
