Heat  index soars to 48° C  in Dagupan City


DAGUPAN CITY,  May 8  (PIA) - - Heat index in Dagupan City soared to 48 degrees celsius on Friday, May 7, bringing a very humid air to Dagupenos and Pangasinenses.

 

 


The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) defines heat index  as the apparent temperature or what human perceive or feel as the temperature  that affects their body.

 

 


The PAGASA weather station in Dagupan City, said high heat index is usually a combination of high air temperature and high relative humidity.

 

 


Dagupan City has been experiencing very high heat indices for three consecutive days. On May 5, heat index registered 46 degrees and 47 degrees on May 7.

The figures were the highest recorded in the country on those days.

 

Other areas which registered very high  heat indices were San Jose, Oriental Mindoro and Sangley Point, Cavite  with 45 degress, Puerto Prones, Palawan with 44 and the cities of Zamboanga,  Masbate  and Laoag with 43 degrees Celsius. 

 


It can be remembered that last year, 2020,  Dagupan City heat index has reached 50° C on May 11.

 

 

 

With heat indices between 32 to 41 degrees Celsius, PAGASA advised residents to observe extreme caution as heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible and continuing activity could result to heat stroke.

 

 


Meanwhile, with heat indices between 41 and 54 degrees Celsius, PAGASA said there is impending “danger” as heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely and “heat stroke is probable with continued activity.”

 

 


If heat index is over 54 degrees Celsius, PAGASA said there is “extreme danger” as “heat stroke is imminent.”

 

 


Dr. Dean Zenarosa, resident physician of the Philippine Information Agency said “Stay hydrated and stay indoors. If going out could not be avoided, it is best to bring protective gears and not to stay too long directly under the sun.”(JCR/VHS/PIA-Pangasinan)
