NegOcc ships hogs to Luzon

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, May 5 (PIA) –- The Province of Negros Occidental, which remains free from African Swine Fever (ASF), has shipped more than 500 heads of fattened hogs to Luzon recently.

The shipment of the 577 live hogs supplied by various hog raisers in Negros Occidental, both commercial and backyard, was made directly through the Batangas port where it is intended for the market in the provinces of Batangas, Cavite and Laguna.

Travel time of about 32 to 38 hours from BREDCO port in Bacolod City to Batangas port was shorter than going straight to the port of Manila thus reducing significantly the stress and loss of weight to live hogs in transit.

The Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinary Office is arranging the possibility of barge shipment of breeder pigs from Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) accredited breeder farms of the province such as Jaltas, V-4, and Central Farms-PIC, for commercial hog raisers in Batangas and Occidental Mindoro in support of the Department of Agriculture's restocking and repopulation program.

These provinces are requesting Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Renante J. Decena, to facilitate the shipment through nautical highway since Oriental Mindoro Oriental does not allow the passing thru of pigs to their province to Luzon since last year despite written request Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.

Meanwhile, the provincial government of Negros Occidental appeals for help from related national government agencies to facilitate movement of live hogs from ASF-free zones to destinations in different parts of Luzon to support DA’s restocking and repopulation effort.

Negros Occidental beefed up its effort to ensure continuous supply of breeder and slaughter hogs to support the needs of ASF stricken provinces in the country. *(LTP/EAD-PIA6 Negros Occidental)
