DUMAGUETE CITY, June 7 (PIA) -- Dumaguete City’s number of active COVID-19 cases rose to 353 following the confirmation of 47 additional cases, mostly those exposed to family members or co-workers of cases reported Sunday.
City Health Officer Dr. Sarah Talla said only one COVID-19 patient, a hospital staff, has recovered but a senior citizen, who was admitted in the hospital with symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI), became the latest fatality.
Since the city was affected by the pandemic from Jan. 30, 2020 to June 6, 2021, the city currently has 353 active COVID-19 cases, 879 recoveries, and 45 deaths.
All the known close contacts of the new COVID-19 cases, including several persons with ILI symptoms, are quarantined and will undergo RT-PCR swab tests.
The massive swab testing of close contacts of COVID-19 is necessary to help authorities promptly identify, isolate, and treat those who will be found positive of the virus, which is a strategy to bring down the surge of cases, Talla said.
Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo has already sought the assistance of national officials so that more COVID-19 vaccines will be sent directly to Dumaguete City to inoculate as many people as possible, particularly the senior citizens.
Sen. Bong Go earlier facilitated the shipment of 10,000 vials of Sinovac (good for 5,000 residents) in response to the urgent appeal of Remollo to send more vaccines directly to Dumaguete City.
Although the city government has allocated P30-M for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines, the procurement of these vaccines are controlled by the national government. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental with reports from CPIO)
