NorMin committee on culture lauds members' accomplishments for 2020

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 2 --The Regional Development Council (RDC)-X's Regional Committee on the Promotion of Culture (RCPC) commended significant gains of regional line agencies, local government units, academe, and non-government organization members in promoting Philippine culture and values during the year 2020.

The Committee convened for its first semester 2021 meeting on 20 May 2021 via video conferencing.

While activities portraying various cultural expressions in the region suffered one of the biggest setbacks by the COVID-19 pandemic, the body celebrated initiatives and programs amidst the crisis. Moreover, priority action areas were identified to achieve targets for the remaining plan period, 2021-2022 and further integrate culture in regional and local development imperatives.  The assessment of the sector and its priorities form part of the 2020 Regional Development Report.

RCPC-X chairperson, Dr. Arturo B. Bayocot, regional director of DepED-X emphasized that culture is part of everyone's life, and knowledge and appreciation of local culture and conservation of the region's heritage is important.

Architectural heritage conservation was also discussed by Architect Alnie Hayudini of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in that meeting. He detailed the work processes and methodologies in maintaining and rehabilitating heritage sites. Through conservation efforts, he added that the significant value of these edifices will be preserved for the generations to come.

Mr. Arli Joshua B. Atienza, also of NCCA, reported the survey results for Northern Mindanao under its agency's Cultural Recovery and Resiliency Plan. In the said study, the agency studied the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to specific culture sectors and laid out a holistic plan to help these worst-hit groups recover.

The members signified their unwavering commitment to strengthen and conserve local culture, values, and education in the subsequent years. (NEDA10)
