MANILA – The Philippine women's football team banked on a first-half surge to beat Fiji, 7-2, in a friendly game in Sydney on Thursday.
In its first match since simply calling itself the Filipinas, the Philippine team quickly deposed Fiji in the first 45 minutes, although the latter's stand in the second half should serve as an eye-opener for the former as it gears up for the Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi starting on May 6.
Quinley Quezada began what would be her birthday bash as she struck first for the Filipinas in the 13th minute.
Anicka Castaneda then made it 2-0 in the 17th minute before Dom Randle added the Filipinas' third goal in the 25th minute.
Captain Tahnai Annis fired back-to-back goals to make it 5-0, while Castaneda finished the first half with her brace for the 6-0 count.
Fiji scored two goals in the second half, which somehow dampened the Filipinas' mood a bit, but Quezada put the exclamation point to the match with her 79th-minute strike that gave her own brace.
The Filipinas will play Fiji again on Monday as they continue their training camp. (PNA)
