MANILA – A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit Davao Oriental Friday morning.

In its earthquake bulletin issued at 8:15 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tectonic quake struck 118 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Tarragona at 8:02 a.m.

It was 60 kilometers deep.

Phivolcs has logged instrumental intensity 2 in Malungon, Sarangani; and instrumental intensity 1 in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Alabel, Sarangani; Koronadal City and Santo Niño, South Cotabato.

Instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Aftershocks are likely, while damage is not expected from the quake.

On Thursday, magnitudes 5.2, 5.7, and 6 (earlier reported by Phivolcs as magnitude 5.8) also jolted Davao Oriental.

The epicenters of these earthquakes were all located over a hundred kilometers from Tarragona.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. earlier said these earthquakes were caused by the movement along the Philippine Trench. (PNA)
