DOH reminds couples to practice proper family planning amid ECQ

CALOOCAN CITY, April 30 (PIA) -- To prevent unwanted pregnancy, the Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday reminded couples to practice proper family planning amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

“Since we are under ECQ, couples may not be able to go to the health center for family planning services and supplies,” DOH Undersecretary Rosario Vergeire said in a briefing.

Couples who have previously used condoms and birth control pills can get their 3-month supply in health centers, Vergeire added.

The local barangay health workers can also distribute the contraceptives to the couples.

“Couples can avail the services of health centers if interested in using a long-term family planning like intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD),” Vergeire said. 

The DOH advised pregnant women to seek assistance from healthcare workers on the appropriate family planning method can be used after giving birth.

“To those couples who have not tried any contraceptives, they can seek advice from midwives, nurses, and doctors through the telemedicine hotlines,” Vergeire said. 

The Commission on Population (POPCOM) has opened its hotline from 7:00am-4:00pm for consultations about family planning at (02) 8782-9284 or (02) 8531-6897.

“There are healthcare workers going around the barangays to provide information about family planning method, vaccinations, and other primary health care service,” Vergeire said. 

The DOH telemedicine hotlines are also available 24/7 for Metro Manila residents at 02-8424-1724.

As of April 28, DOH recorded 7,958 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 530 deaths and 975 recoveries. The health department also announces the country’s testing capacity is 6,320 per day with 19 certified testing laboratories. (PIA-NCR)
