Aklan fishermen get loan asistance from BFAR

KALIBO, Aklan, May 15 (PIA6) --  The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) here provided loans to 456 fishermen in the province under the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC).

BFAR-Aklan Information Officer-Designate Victoria Magalit said the ACPC is a government program assisting farmers by providing each of them a loan of P25,000.00 payable in 14 years.

Initially funded under the loan program are the fishermen from the towns of Altavas, Batan and New Washington, all from the eastern district of Aklan, with a total allocation of P11.4 million.

The fund, according to Magalit, was downloaded to accredited conduit cooperatives based in New Washington, Libacao, Lezo and Madalag.

Magalit added the loan assistance is a continuous program of the government which was first offered last year following the destruction brought by typhoon Ursula to the livelihood of Aklan fishermen, both for marginal or owners of fishponds.

Fishermen can only avail of this loan if they are registered at their respective Municipal Fisheries Offices, she said.

She assured that fishermen from other coastal towns of Aklan will also avail of the loans soon.

Magalit said that aside from the loans, BFAR also extended help to qualified fisherfolk who operate fishponds by giving them fish fries.

This  service is still an intervention of BFAR which is extended to the group to help them recover from the damages wrought by typhoon Ursula, she added. (JSC/VGV/PIA6 Aklan)
