ILOILO CITY, May 25 (PIA6) – The Department of Tourism (DOT) Region VI has assisted 2,821 tourists stranded in Western Visayas through sweeper flights.
In a post on their social media account, DOT-6 Director lawyer Helen J. Catalbas said this was made possible through nine DOT-initiated flights and 44 DOT-assisted flights or trips as of May 20, 2020
All the initiated flights were done in coordination with the embassies, Regional Task Force on COVID-19, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Police Regional Office VI, local government units in Western Visayas and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines-Iloilo.
Meanwhile, DOT-6 also reported that a total of 109 Western Visayans stranded in Palawan arrived in Iloilo through Montenegro RoRo Vessel on May 21, 2020.
The trip was a collaboration of the Provincial Government of Palawan and the Department of Tourism Region IV-B (MIMAROPA) in coordination with the Western Visayas Regional Task Force Sub Task Unit for LSIs, Western Visayas LGUs and DOT Region VI.
Onboard the ship were Western Visayans going home to Aklan, Bacolod City, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo City, Iloilo Province and Negros Occidental.
It will be recalled that the national government has ordered the transport of Locally Stranded Individuals as recommended by the National Task Force.
NTF has also issued on May 13 a memorandum stating guidelines in facilitating the transport of LSIs, who included Filipino local workers, students, local or foreign tourists, individuals stranded in various localities while in transit, and other stranded individuals. (DOT/PIA6)
