VIGAN CITY, May 31 (PIA) - The Philippine National Police’s (PNP) “Adopt a Family” program has provided food packs and other voluntary donation to a total of 1,560 indigent families and stranded individuals in Ilocos Sur to help sustain their needs during the quarantine period.
These food packs include essential goods such as rice, canned goods, noodles, condiments, biscuits, and coffee.
Aside from providing security in the province, the Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office (ISPPO) said that all municipal and city police offices and 1st and 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) in the province have been constantly distributing relief packs to individuals and families who are in need of assistance.
Police Executive Master Sergeant Joseph Fieldad of ISPPO said that police officers in Ilocos Sur have been very supportive to the implementation of the program since the beginning of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
“Initially ito ay fund raising through voluntary donation ng lahat ng PNP personnel ng Ilocos Sur at para masustain yung programa, nanggagaling na ito sa allocated fund ng city o municipal police station,” he said.
"Adopt a Family" program encourages PNP officers to help the community, most especially the most needy families, amidst the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic crisis.
Recipients are evaluated by the municipal and city police offices according to their financial capability especially those indigent families.
In Sinait town, police personnel provided food packs to senior citizens from Barangay Ricudo who aren’t receiving senior citizen’s pension, where one is suffering from mild stroke and both have eye problem, and two senior citizens from Barangay Katipunan, where the head of the family is totally blind.
Other than low income households, police personnel in Ilocos Sur also distributed relief packs to 168 stranded individuals from various municipalities.
Aside from this program, city and municipal offices are implementing the “Libreng Sakay” program, which offers free rides to residents especially those having emergency cases.
In Sta. Catalina town, according to PLT Marcos Rafanan, officer-on-charge Chief of Police of the police office, three patrol vehicles are on standby 24/7 and these can carry four individuals.
“Naka-standby 24/7 ang aming mga patrol vehicle para sa mga residente na nangangailangan ng masasakyan lalo sa mga emergency cases,” said Rafanan.
Regional public information office chief, Maj. Winnie De Vera said that even if public transportation such as tricycles are allowed since the implementation of general community quarantine, each vehicle has a minimum capacity to carry so the continuous implementation of the ‘Libreng Sakay’ program helps residents.
She also reminded the public to stay at home and always follow minimum health protocols.
“Kung wala namang importanteng gagawin sa labas kahit APOR pa, manatili na lamang po tayo sa bahay para maiwasang mahawa kung walang sakit at manghawa ng iba kung kayo naman ay may sakit,” she said. (JCR/AMB/JMCQ/PIA Ilocos Sur)
