Pres. Duterte eases lockdown in Metro Manila starting June 1

CALOOCAN CITY, May 29 (PIA) -- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Thursday evening approved placing Metro Manila under a more relaxed general community quarantine (GCQ) beginning June 1.

In a televised address multicast by the Presidential Communications and affiliate government media, the President approved the recommendation by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, which would open up more economic activities in the National Capital Region (NCR).

“You know the NCR will now be placed under the general community quarantine or the GCQ starting June 1,” Duterte said, emphasizing that the areas of Davao City, regions 2, 3, 4-A, Pangasinan and Albay will remain under GCQ.

“Yan sila, until we have reviewed the general situation. We are not happy to put you in this place but after review may be we can,” he said.

“The rest of the country will be placed under modified general community quarantine. That is very clear now,” he added, saying that other areas may be placed under stringent lockdown on a “piecemeal basis depending on the viability of the place to meet the challenges of COVID-19.”

Duterte then tasked Presidential spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque to immediately announce if ever there will be lockdown changes in an area.

To recall, the 12.8-million plus densely populated NCR accounts for most of the COVID-19 cases, deaths, and recoveries recorded in the Philippines since the first wave of local transmission.

As of Thursday evening, the President also reported, “we have a total number of COVID cases of 15,588.” He, however, noted that the country has a relatively low mortality rate when it comes to COVID-19.

“Now, the recoveries, 92 new ones with a total of 3,598. Ang patay is 921 so you would see Philippines' ratio and proportion vis-a-vis with population we have a low rate of mortality here,” Duterte said. (PIA NCR)
