LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, June 29(PIA) - - In the midst of this pandemic when everybody is trying to cope for survival, a community in Kabayan displayed the Filipino spirit of “bayanihan’ for a couple.
Councilor Ghislyn Marave shared that a couple named Elmo, 62 years old and Yolanda Angel, 56, from Poblacion, Kabayan had been staying with their relatives but transferred to a smaller space which they are currently renting out. The wife manages a small time store which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the onset of the enhanced community quarantine, Elmo was brought to the hospital due to a lingering illness.
Neighbors, relatives and friends saw the need for a more spacious house which they could use for vigil in case something happens to the Elmo. Out of their concern for their barrio mates, they initiated construction of the couple’s own house and sought the help of Mayor Faustino Aquisan, according to Marave who chairs the Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Social Services.
Aquisan contacted the barangay and some individuals for possible pooling of resources. Help in various forms immediately started to pour in. The Kabayan Municipal Police Station also committed materials and install the electric wirings.
Aside from the materials and other donations, labor construction in building the house was also rendered free including site development of the lot owned by the couple.
Marave said the Bayanihan spirit commenced from the pooling of resources for materials, ground works, manual transport of materials, to house construction.
With the house almost done, the couple could only thank barangay and municipal local governments, the community and the police forces for their overwhelming support in the spirit of bayanihan.
By God's grace, Elmo is now recuperating, said Marave. (JDP/SCA-PIA-CAR, Benguet)
