CALOOCAN CITY, June 2 (PIA) --The City Government of San Juan, in cooperation with EDSA Evolution will be setting up pop-up bike lanes to protect our frontliners, as well as the people who will be going back to work using their bikes this week.

EDSA Evolution is a group of individuals and organizations from all over the Philippines that aim to make bicycles and other forms of active mobility a staple on roads.

San Juan will officially launch Phase 1 of the pop-up bike lane on World Bicycle Day, Wednesday, 3 June 2020, at the Pinaglabanan Shrine at 9am.

The move is line with the initiatives to provide the people with a safe transportation option during the implementation of the General Community Quarantine (GCQ).

In a statement, the City Government said it is necessary to provide more mobility options to the public given the uncertainties brought by this pandemic despite tricycles have already resumed operations last Thursday.

Initial set up of the bike lanes were set up on 31 May 2020, Sunday in anticipation of people’s return to work by Monday, June 1.

The Phase 1 of the pop-up bike lane will be from N. Domingo to Ortigas Ave. before the intersection of Connecticut which will pass through major facilities and institutions like the San Juan Medical Center (SJMC), the San Juan City Hall, Greenhills Shopping Center, and near Cardinal Santos Medical Center.

The city government cited the use bicycles as a means of transportation amid the pandemic such as COVID-19, which requires social distancing has proven effective recently.

“It does not only enable the public to observe social distancing, it also is a sustainable and environment-friendly mode of transportation that promotes an active lifestyle,” San Juan City Government stated.
