Over 17,000 displaced workers, fresh grads benefit from DOLE's programs

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Aug. 24 (PIA) - - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) region has provided job opportunities to over 17,000 displaced workers who were affected by the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic.

Paulo Baquiran of DOLE region 2 reported to the Regional Task Force (RTF) COVID-19 that there were 17, 477 individuals benefitted from the department's Tulong Pangkabuhayan para sa mga Disadvantaged/Displaced workers (TUPAD) program in June and July.

"For the TUPAD program, we already released P66.9 million already for the 40 approved projects of the said beneficiaries," Baquiran said 

Baquiran added that the agency has resumed its Government Internship Program (GIP) which employs fresh graduates and unemployed youth.

For the months of June and July, there were already 1, 875 GIPs beneficiaries in which Isabela province registered the highest number with 1, 320, followed by Cagayan with 459, Quirino with 57, Nueva Vizcaya-29, and Batanes - 10. 

Baquiran said 240 of the GIPs were hired through the "continuing fund" of DOLE in which their salaries were sourced out from the remaining program funds last year while for the other 1,635, their salaries were sourced out from the program's current fund. 

On the other hand, DOLE 2 also continuously processes issuance of certification for the payment of unemployment insurance of displaced workers.

For June, there were 329 applications but only 202 were given certifications while 127 applications were denied. 

Of the said number, 101 are locally displaced workers and 101 were displaced Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

For the month of July, there were 769 applications in which 310 were given certifications while there were 459 applications denied.

Of the approved applications, 93 are locally displaced workers while 104 are OFWs, and there was one reported displaced kasambahay. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
