PLGU promotes ‘kitchen garden’ among 4Ps, indigent Southern Leyteños

MAASIN CITY, Aug. 27 (PIA) -- In line with the recovery plan of the provincial government of Southern Leyte, “kitchen garden” is among its initiatives to promote food sufficiency among Southern Leyteños.

The kitchen garden project, spearheaded by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), targeted Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries and indigent households to benefit from the said program.

Darwin O. Melagroso, the project focal person said that around 30,000 indigent families and 18,410 Pantawid beneficiaries are listed for the said project.

The project supports the goal of 4Ps and other indigent beneficiaries in terms of improved nutrition through food sufficiency and ensures that food will be available at their tables especially during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Melagroso added that the project also supports the ‘Plant, Plant, Pant’ program of the Department of Agriculture.

In close coordination with the Provincial Agricultural Services Office, Melagroso said the project aims to increase the number of kitchen gardening adopters among the target beneficiaries.

The program intends to produce various kinds of vegetables and root crops for households which will eventually reduce family’s expenses as well.

The municipal links of the Pantawid program underwent an orientation as to the project implementation in each of their concerned localities, Melagroso added.

He said the seeds and other planting materials are available at the Municipal Agriculture Office.

“There are five kinds of vegetable seeds and a crop for the said project such as pechay, tomato, string beans, bell pepper and camote tops and sweet potato,” he added.

As of this writing, the project had already spent around P375,000 for the seeds alone. (ldl/esg/rgc/PIA8-S. Leyte)
