SAN FERNANDO CITY, Aug. 30 (PIA) -- The Regional Development Council in the Ilocos (RDC-1) approved the proposal for the creation of the La Union Office of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).

In the 2nd Full Council Meeting held on Wednesday, NCIP-1 Regional Director Roland Calde presented their office’s proposal before the officers and members of the RDC-1 led by Chairperson and Vigan City Mayor Juan Carlo S. Medina.

Initially, Calde said La Union is the only province in Region 1 that does not have a provincial office, hence the said request.

While there are two service centers in La Union located in the towns of Sudipen and Bauang, the regional director said those cannot fully perform or function the services under various NCIP administrative orders due to lack of necessary staffing compliment.

“The establishment of a provincial office will greatly strengthen the agency’s capacity in looking into the interest and welfare of indigenous peoples (IPs) in La Union,” Calde said.

After the approval of the RDC-1, the proposal will be further endorsed by the body to Secretary Allen A. Capuyan, NCIP Chairman.

Six of the 20 towns in La Union are identified as IP municipalities, being predominantly inhabited by different IP tribes, which includes the Kankanaey, Ibaloi, and Bago Tribe.

Currently, the estimated population of IPs in the province is at 87,706. (JCR/JPD, PIA La Union)
