S. Leyte’s 'recovery plan for environment' targets hiring of unemployed, on and off workers

MAASIN CITY, Aug. 24 (PIA) -- As the province of Southern Leyte started its recovery plan due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the environment sector through the Provincial Environment of Natural Resources and Management Office (PENRMO) has prioritized unemployed and on and off laborers to work in the afforestation project.

The afforestation project involves strip digging, pulling of weeds and replanting activities which include maintenance of trees planted in existing afforestation project sites.

“LGU-Southern Leyte identified five hectares of land in Barangay Laboon, Maasin City  as the afforestation site,” said ENRM Officer Dr. Eva Abad in a press briefing here on Wednesday, August 19.

Those nearby barangays of the aforementioned site will also be prioritized to work in the said project such as barangays San Jose, Bagtikan, Bogo, Nasaug, Soro-soro and Laboon, Abad said.

The province targeted 120 workers from these barangays who will work on a shift basis for 10 days with a P325 pay per day.

“Each worker will get a total of P3,250 for 10 days,” Abad said.

Other qualified beneficiaries are displaced workers due to COVID-19 pandemic, between 21-59 years old following the Inter-Agency Task Force mandate and those who are able and willing to work.

The afforestation project, with an allocation of P390,000, is under the Emergency Employment Program which is one of the four projects lined up for the “Pangandam sa Bag-ong Panahon” recovery plan of the province, Abad said.

Other programs include Food Security, Manpower Re-Engineering or the “Bag-ong Abilidad sa Bag-ong Normal” and the Food Sufficiency Program Kitchen Garden Project. (ldl/esg/rgc/PIA8-SoLeyte)
