S. Leyte’s total population projected to hit 456k, PSA estimates

MAASIN CITY, Aug. 23 (PIA) -- The number of people living in the province could probably reach more or less 456,000 individuals.

This was the projection raised by Eutemio Llevado Jr., provincial statistical officer of the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) in Southern Leyte.

At the special Kapihan/press conference held at PIA Thursday, Llevado reported that in the mid-term census held in 2015, the total population of the province was 421,750 individuals while the total households placed at 420,374.

Maasin City has the highest number of people, followed by Sogod, Hinunangan, and Saint Bernard, not necessarily in that order, Llevado said without citing specific figures.

Asked what was PSA’s take on the terms household and family, Llevado said they use household which can have two or three extended families inside based on our culture, but every person shall be accounted, thus the slight difference in the 2015 data on the total number of individuals and households.

The year 2020 -- and every year ending in zero -- is a census year, supposedly starting May 1 at 12:01 AM, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the date was moved to September 1, when 536 census enumerators hired by PSA will be going around the 500 barangays of the province.

The returning LSIs and OFWs will not have significant impact on the resulting population figure which will be gathered by the enumerators as these are all spread throughout the province, Llevado said.  (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
