DA-NFRDI addresses fisheries' modernization, consolidation

QUEZON CITY, Sept. 19 (PIA) - The Department of Agriculture-National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI) is addressing the modernization  which is diversification of fish food and introduction of agripreneurship and farm consolidation such as mechanization and cooperative farming of the fisheries sector this year.

In the report posted on its website, DA-NFRDI prioritizes 22 projects that aim to enhance and expand aquaculture practices in the Philippines.

This will eventually help increase fisheries productivity, competitiveness, and profitability while ensuring sufficiency of fish food supplies amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the 22 projects, 15 projects are under the NFRDI and BFAR National Center Collaborative Agreement, totaling Php23M in funding. Said projects focus on increasing productivity of high-quality seafood breeding such as siganid, tilapia, mudfish, ayungin, milkfish, oyster, and seaweeds to name a few.

Seven projects center on the application of verified fisheries technologies on production and nursery rearing of tilapia, milkfish, and carp, among others. With a budget of Php5.6M, the NFRDI-National Centers aim to provide materials and technical assistance to selected cooperators/beneficiaries

Overall, these projects are bold manifestations of the zealousness of DA-NFRDI in aligning its current projects with food security goals of the Department.         (MCG/PIA-IDPD/TBuico)
