DA’s SAAD program delivers 100 sows in Southern Leyte

LILOAN, Southern Leyte, Sept. 7 (PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) has delivered some 100 adult female swine intended for livestock projects of 10 farmers’ association at 10 sows per organization under the DA’s Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program.

Forty (40) of the 100 full-grown pigs were unloaded in Barangay Tabugon here last week for the four farmers association in this town, the delivery witnessed by members of the local media.

The Liloan recipients were the farmers’ association of barangays Ilag, San Isidro, Anilao, and San Roque, said Jocelyn Cabanas, in-charge of SAAD in the province.

“Other municipalities that are recipients of swine production are the two farmers association, per municipality, of Pintuyan, Tomas Oppus, and Malitbog.  Each association received 10 ready-to-breed gilts and feeds,” Cabanas told PIA in a follow-up query by messenger chat.

The stocks came from Dipolog, in Mindanao, and were bought by the agency at a cost of P37,000 per head, Cabanas said.

Care of the sows will be the responsibility of the organization, but material support like feeds are to be provided by SAAD, as well as multivitamins, and antibiotics, for the first cycle, that is, the time span within which the animals give birth to expected healthy piglets, Cabanas shared.

Priority for marketing of the piglets are the SAAD-assisted farmers organization that are into swine-fattening projects, like the barangay Pangi farmers association of the neighboring town Libagon, Cabanas also said.   (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
