MAASIN CITY, Sept. 7 (PIA) -- All 18,410 household members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in Southern Leyte are the main beneficiaries of Kitchen Garden Project, a food sufficiency, Covid-19 recovery program of the provincial government.
Likewise, the more or less 40,000 indigents around the province, as identified by the municipal/city social welfare offices, will also be among the target beneficiaries, said Darwin Melagroso, a staff at the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO).
In an interview at the Media Briefing/Kapihan sa PIA last week, Melagroso said bidding for the vegetable seeds was still in the process and once this will be available, the orientation and seeds distribution will be done anytime, so the recipients can start planting right in their own backyard in time for the rainy season.
Pechay, pepper, string beans, tomatoes, and sweet potato or camote will be the main planting materials under the kitchen garden food sufficiency program, which also supports the current plant, plant, plant program of the Department of Agriculture, Melagroso reported.
He added that for this year, a budget of P300,000 was earmarked for this purpose, and by next year onwards there are plans to institutionalize this program for sustainability.
Bonifacio “Yoyex” Egido, another staff at PSWDO who was also guest at the Kapihan, encouraged the people to be involved in this project for this would help ensure enough nutritious food at the table for all Southern Leyteños.
Homes with no space even for a backyard can still do the planting using discarded materials like used tin cans, plastic containers, and even sando bags or cellophanes big enough to hold soil and water, and these can be placed or hung by the windows, Egido said. (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
