NDRRMC holds various virtual activities for 3rd NSED 2020

CEBU CITY, Sept. 14 (PIA) -- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) through the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) conducted various online activities for the 3rd quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) to strengthen public earthquake preparedness amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A webinar on earthquake preparedness and response in the New Normal was held on Sept. 8, with Usec. Renato Solidum of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs) as one of the resource persons.

During the webinar, Solidum emphasized the importance of awareness on earthquake hazards such as surface faulting, ground shaking, landslide, liquefaction, tectonic deformation, and tsunami.

Solidum encouraged the public to be aware of the hazard-prone areas and always be prepared for potential disasters like earthquake, typhoons, and flooding even amid the pandemic.

He also shared about the Philvocs FaultFinder application that is capable to do proximity searches to active faults.

The app may be used to determine the location of active faults in an area and to measure the shortest distance between an active fault and a user’s current location, which is determined by the gadget’s tracking device.

It can also be used to measure the shortest distance between an active fault and a specific site, which is identified by a user.

Another app that Philvocs launched is the HazardHunterPH which enables mobile users to conduct earthquake-related hazard assessment for ground rupture, ground shaking, liquefaction, earthquake-induced landslides, and tsunami, among others.

Philvocs created the apps to check potential hazards in a specific area.

The apps can be accessed through the Georisk Philippines website.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) also joined the discussion, while the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) presented an update on the National and Regional Public Service Continuity Plans as well as its Contingency Plans to integrate COVID-19 health measures.

Meanwhile, OCD also held on Sept. 10 a Facebook livestream of the ceremonial pressing of the button to signal the duck, cover, and hold procedure.

It was participated in by the national and regional line agencies, local government units (LGUs) and partner stakeholders.

NDRRMC urged the public to engage in activities that promote disaster resilience. (hfg/PIA)
