LILOAN, Southern Leyte, Sept. 1 (PIA) -- The scare of Covid-19 was not able to stop the establishment of a new, modern slaughterhouse from taking shape in barangay Tabugon, this town, a first of its kind facility in the province.
Completion of its perimeter fence and training of personnel for management was all that was needed in order for the new site for butchering animals to become operational.
In a visit here Thursday last week, Dr. Francisco “Dodo” Cabarrubias, provincial veterinarian, described in front of members of the local media the various processes by which animals like pigs, cows, and carabaos are butchered in a clean and systematic manner.
Construction of the concrete structure was covered by the local government unit of Liloan, while butchering equipment and accessories costing P1.480 million was the counterpart of the province, Cabarrubias said.
The new slaughterhouse has met the double A standard set by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), whose personnel are expected to come anytime this month to conduct the training of personnel, he added.
A similar NMIS-compliant slaughterhouse is also under construction in Hinunangan town, while three other LGUS such as Malitbog, Tomas Oppus, and Bontoc will soon follow.
In the next few years, the vision is that all the municipal and city slaughterhouses in the province will conform to the NMIS standards for a clean, spacious butchering service, Cabarrubias disclosed. (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
