CEBU CITY, Sept. 14 (PIA) -- The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Central Visayas is appealing for the public's continued participation in the ongoing 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) in the region.
“We at PSA are calling for all the support we could get for the success of this year’s Census of Population and Housing,” said PSA-7 Regional Director Engr. Ariel Florendo in a virtual press conference.
The CPH aims to provide policy makers and planners with updated data on the country’s population and housing record.
Collected data will be used as the basis for the government’s social and economic development plans, policies, and programs both at the national and local levels.
“We are asking our dear stakeholders, partners in other National Government Agencies, and especially our Local Government Units, to help us promote and enjoin everyone to participate in this very crucial activity,” he added.
Florendo also said that while the conduct of census of population has never been easy before because of the reluctance of some citizens to participate, the fear of contracting COVID-19 made the work tougher this year.
He, however, assured the enumerators were trained on how to safely conduct the census and that they are equipped with alcohol and necessary personal protective equipment.
“Apart from our usual training for enumerators, we have also partnered with the Department of Health to ensure our field workers are made aware of the public health standards that they must practice at all times,” Florendo said.
Meanwhile, National Economic Development Authority (NEDA-7) Regional Director Efren Carreon expressed his support to PSA and encouraged the public to make PSA’s work easier by participating in the survey.
“This year’s census is going to have a very critical part of our governance in the coming years, especially after what happened during this COVID-19 pandemic,” Carreon said.
“Development planning is highly dependent on population data, so this very important undertaking will be made easier if all our stakeholders are reached and involved,” he added.
Carreon also lauded the strong inter-agency coordination in the region and as well as the key government agencies’ strong ties with the media, who could help make more people understand the importance of the census.
The PSA has also given an alternative for those who would prefer contactless participation in the 2020 CPH through the new innovation online approach called Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing or CAWI. (jkm/PIA7)
