S. Leyte pushes online learning for new normal, Covid-19 recovery program

MAASIN CITY, Sept. 15 (PIA) -- Everything is going virtual nowadays in an atmosphere of the coronavirus pandemic, so the provincial government will invest in computers, printers, modems, routers, and other related accessories for distribution to the 19 local government units.

This is part of the “Pangandam sa Bag-ong Panahon” Covid-19 recovery program of the provincial government, in particular entitled Manpower Re-Engineering Program “Bag-ong Abilidad sa Bag-ong Normal” project.

Vitto Tomol, head of the provincial systems administrator’s office (PSAO), who also handles the computer-driven project, said training centers in all the 18 towns and one city of the province will be established in line with this new normal learning, so those interested can gain access to modular, online training courses offered by TESDA and DOST.

He said priority for enrollment are those displaced due to the pandemic, for them to acquire skills or get certificates needed for putting up a business or for employment, although concerned LGUs may welcome any other interested individuals in their areas.

Two months after being launched, however, bidding for the essential gadgets, which has a budget of P1.9 million, was not carried out on schedule because of high demand for laptop computers, Tomol reported at the Media Briefing/Kapihan sa PIA Wednesday.

Another concern that is still being worked out was on the matter of internet connectivity, and this would be closely coordinated with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which has plans to put up free wifi access in public places, schools among them, Tomol said.

But four LGUs -- Tomas Oppus, Sogod, Liloan, and Saint Bernard -- that have maintained a functional 4TechEd Center may proceed with the short-term training courses, although there is still a need to enhance connectivity in these places, Tomol also said.  (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
