DUMAGUETE CITY, Oct. 20 (PIA) –- Dumaguete City Traffic and Management Office (TMO) has advised the riding public to check the traffic adjustment and modified scheme during the scheduled visiting hours and days in different public and private cemeteries and memorial parks in the city.
Chief Gilbert Ablong of TMO said the traffic scheme is to ensure a safe and handy travel for motorists leading to cemeteries during the observance of Kalag-Kalag season starting Oct. 20 to 28 and Nov. 5 to 7 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The traffic adjustments will be enforced pursuant to Executive Order No. 22 series of 2020 of Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo.
The affected streets include a portion of San Jose Extension (Bogo) bounded by Dela Viña Street and Larena Drive to be designated as one-way traffic from east to west direction; road going to Chinese cemetery to be designated as one-way traffic from east to west direction; and the eastern and southern peripheries of Bagacay and Everlasting Cemeteries are designated as pedestrianized zones or walking streets.
To avoid delay of travel, the riding public is advised to take alternative routes during the said dates and times.
Meanwhile, City Chief of Police PCol. Mark Gifter Sucalit reminded the public not to bring prohibited items inside the cemetery such as firearms, bladed weapons, alcoholic drinks, gambling paraphernalia, and loudspeakers.
He said command centers and police assistance desks will be set up near the entrance of all cemeteries.
Kalag-Kalag is a local term for All Saints’ Day derived from the Spanish word “honrar” meaning “to honor,” and refers to the tradition of honoring the dead on this day.
All Saints’ Day is observed as a public holiday in the Philippines on Nov. 1.
The number of Kalag-Kalag passes issued on an hourly basis depends on the population of the barangays.
Hence, the maximum number of pass range from 10 passes per hour among the biggest barangays to two passes for smaller barangays.
A resident can only get a Kalag-Kalag Pass once.
Those who are 15 years old below or 65 years old and above are not allowed to visit the cemeteries. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
