LOS BAÑOS, Laguna, Oct 15 (PIA) --The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) CALABARZON has formally turned over fiber glass rescue boats to Barangay Bambang of this municipality, in a virtual ceremony held last October 5, 2020.
DOST-CALABARZON Regional Director Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal said during the virtual turnover ceremony that it was one of the department’s many projects to provide technology for community development, including livelihood support and assistance to Bantay-Dagat and other coastal activities, and in enhancing Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) initiatives in both barangay and municipal levels.
He also cited the department’s future project with Los Baños to upgrade the municipality's solid waste management and treatment facilities.
Meanwhile, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) IV-A Regional Director Olivia M. Luces recognized the efforts of the DOST-CALABARZON and its partners in optimizing available government resources to generate more equipment for rescue and other similar operations.
Barangay Captain Arlene P. Delos Santos accepted the fiber glass rescue boat in behalf of Bambang.
The technical reliability and design of the fiber glass rescue boat was reviewed and approved by the OCD IV-A, National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) IV-A, Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Philippine Coast Guard, and several fiber glass fabricators in the region.
A short video featuring its testing in Los Baños, and San Mateo, Rizal and Talisay, Batangas in 2011 was also shown during the turnover.
In her closing remarks, DOST-CALABARZON Assistant Regional Director for Technical Operations Emelita P. Bagsit expressed her gratitude towards the residents of Barangay Bambang for their trust and confidence to DOST-developed technology.
She recognized the different collaborators in the development of the rescue boat, adding that while she does not hope for any crisis to come to pass, these contributions allow will local government units to respond more efficiently during emergencies.
