TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Oct. 28 (PIA) - - Officials of Sta. Teresita town are now investigating the possible source of the first Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) case of the town.

Mayor Rodrigo De Gracia said they are being puzzled of the possible source of the virus since the patient has no travel history. The patient known as CV2675 is a 24 year-old male, single and a laborer.

He has fever as symptom according to the report of the Department of Health (DOH) region 2.

De Gracia said the victim met an accident on October 24 in which police officers who investigated the road mishap brought him to a hospital in Gonzaga, the neighboring town of Sta. Teresita.

Due to bone fracture, the patient was supposed to be transferred to the Cagayan Valley Medical Center. Before his supposed to be transfer, as a standard protocol of the hospitals, the patient was subjected to a swab test which turned positive yesterday.

"He was brought at the isolation facility in his barangay while we wait for the result. He is not yet transferred to CVMC," De Gracia said.

The Mayor said he trusts the surveillance activities of the contract tracers in his town as he is optimistic that they could determine the possible source of the virus.

He further said all 'close contacts' of the patient are now under quarantine including the police officers who picked and brought him to the hospital.

"For eight months, we managed to safeguard our town from the entry of the virus but we regret to inform that we already have a case but we do our best to contain the further spread of the virus," De Gracia said.

The mayor also ordered immediate conduct of disinfection in all vital establishments as well as at the municipal hall.

He also reminded Teresians not to be complacent, instead, follow strictly the health protocols set by the government to include wearing of face masks, face shields, washing of hands, using of disinfectants, avoid mass gathering and maintain social distancing.

Earlier, Sta. Teresita was declared to be one of the remaining two towns that are COVID-19 free in the province, along with Sta. Praxedes. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
