Around 7,000 banana farmers to benefit from tissue hardening nursery

CABARROGUIS, Quirino, Nov. 9 (PIA)-- The launching of the banana tissue culture hardening nursery in the  province would be a great assistance to the estimated 7,000 banana farmers planting in over 12, 000 hectares farms in the province, according to Governor Dax Cua.

The launching which is a part of the Regional Science and Technology Week celebration from September 29 to November 19, 2020 carried the theme, “Saging Kabuhayan Para sa Malusog na Mamamayan,” was hosted by the Department of Science and Technology – Provincial Science and Technology Quirino and it was aired live at the Facebook page of the DOST 02.

In his message during the recent launching of the Banana Tissue Culture Hardening Nursery for Livelihood, Gov. Cua said the facility can help secure better harvests that will lead to higher earnings.

The governor likewise thanked the DOST and Quirino State University for collaborating in coming up with innovations and  new solutions to the modern problems of our modern civilization.

“In the  late 2000s, the banana bunchy top virus disease spread all over our province and this caused heavy damage to the plantations in Diffun and Cabarroguis, and also some minimal damages in the municipalities Nagtipuan and Maddela. The farmers suffered huge losses since their plantations have been exposed to such pestilence and the once profitable banana farms suffered great losses,” Cua shared.

He said since then,  the provincial government  has  started its initiatives to rehabilitate the banana industry by introducing new technology that will solve the pestilence and other issues regarding bananas.

Furthermore, the governor said the new project from the DOST would be a great help in furthering our purpose of helping our banana farmers not only in avoiding pestilence, but also securing quality growth of the banana trees, which will bear fruit that they can sell at higher prices.

“It is through modern innovations that we have thrived in overcoming challenges and adversity. It is also through it that we will overcome more,  like the great enemy that we  have upon us today, no other than the Covid-19 pandemic,” Cua added.

Gov. Cua  has expressed the provincial government’s  firm commitment to support the projects of DOST in every way it  can saying that  through  the Quirinians’ united action, the province will be able overcome the  challenges of the world.  (MDCT/TCB/PIA 2-Quirino)
