DUMAGUETE CITY, Nov. 4 (PIA) -- A total of 48 detainees at the Dumaguete City police detention center underwent swab tests as a requirement for their transfer to the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) City Jail.

Chief-of-Police Lt. Col. Mark Gifter Sucalit expressed gratitude to the City’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases for deploying health workers who conducted swab tests for the detainees.

The detainees were all found to be negative of COVID-19.

Sucalit said the mass transfer has decongested the three detention cells of the Philippine National Police with only 54 remaining inmates, which is significantly lower than the 94 individuals prior to the swab testing and subsequent transfer.

The police chief has requested assistance for the swab testing of the detainees, who had commitment orders, to relieve the overcrowded detention cells that put their health at risk amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The City Health Office has been regularly monitoring the health status of all detainees to prevent any outbreak of diseases.

With the transfer of 48 inmates to BJMP, the detention cells are now decongested by almost 46 percent, said Sucalit. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
