KALIBO, Aklan, Nov. 5 (PIA) – The Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Council (MADAC) of the local government of Nabas recently launched “Kumusta Kapatid” for Person Who Used Drugs (PWUDs).
The “Kumusta Kapatid” intends to check and monitor the PWUDs after successfully completed the community-based rehabilitation program (CBRP) conducted by the town’ rural health unit and were immersed back to their respective communities.
Police Major Fidel T. Gentallan, acting chief of police of Nabas Municipal Police Station, said that monitoring the progress of the graduates, as well as providing them with aftercare support, is essential to ensure that PWUDs would not return to their old habit.
“With the ‘Kumusta Kapatid’ program, this will update us the status of these PWUDs and we will be able to know if they are still engaged in illegal activities,” Gentallan said.
He added that the program will also be conducting other activities that would strengthen the PWUDs reformation especially that they are sent back in their communities.
The said activities will help earn the support and cooperation of the community; hence, would eliminate discrimination against the PWUDs.
The "Kumusta Kapatid" would help promote the PNP’s advocacy campaign against Illegal drugs.
Gentallan noted that it would take some time in assisting PWUDs to be fully reformed individuals and be productive members of the society, but MADAC-Nabas is fully committed to serve the council’s mission amid the pandemic.
On the same event, Joel Tan, a PWUD from Kalibo, graced the activity and talked about his struggles and bitter experiences at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and urged the 80 PWUDs attendees not to return to their old habit. Instead, he encouraged PWUDs to seek the guidance of the Lord God.
Also in attendance were the officers and members of MADAC-Nabas from the Philippine National Police, Rural Health Unit, Department of Education, Nabas General Parent Teacher Community Association, Office of Senior Citizens Affairs, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and Nabas Transport Group.
