Metro Manila DRRMC reschedules last quarter NSED on Nov. 27

CALOOCAN CITY, Nov. 25 (PIA) -- The Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) has rescheduled the Fourth Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) 2020 in the National Capital Region on Friday, Nov. 27, at 9:00 a.m.

According to Office of Civil Defense-NCR Regional Director and concurrent MMDRRMC Senior Vice-Chairperson Romulo Cabantac Jr., the NSED will be held via live streaming on official and social media channels, such as the Civil Defense-CBTS Facebook Page and Youtube accounts.

“In reference to NDRRMC Memorandum No. 106 and OCD Memorandum No. 571, s. 2020 dated 23 November 2020, the 4th Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) 2020 is rescheduled on 27 November 2020 at 9:00 a.m. with the online hosting and streaming of the ceremonial pressing of the button as the main activity,” Cabantac said.

The official said this coming NSED would be promoting “tsunami preparedness amidst COVID-19 pandemic.”

Experts from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) said there are historical evidences of tsunami hitting Metro Manila and if the same happens now, many people are exposed.

Specifically, the cities of Valenzuela, Navotas, Malabon, Manila, Pasay, Las Piñas, and Parañaque, face the threat of tsunami that could be generated from a possible movement of the Manila Trench.

The DOST-PHIVOLCS said it is important to make sure that the people are informed of what can happen so they can prepare.

Meanwhile, all MMDRRMC agency members and the 17 Metro Manila local government units are also encouraged to invite their respective Local DRRM Councils and Barangay DRRM Committees and other stakeholders to participate in the NSED.

To recall, the NSED has been rescheduled to the later date due to Typhoon Ulysses. (PIA NCR)
