TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Nov. 23 (PIA) - - After the devastating landslides and floods in Cagayan Valley Region, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) region 2 has urged Local Government Units to revisit their Comprehensive Land Use Plans and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plans.
Felicitas Piligan, geologist, said there were several areas in the different parts of the region that they have assessed and identified as high risks.
For those that are within the communities, she said, they recommended to their respective LGUs to relocate the settlers within the areas.
She said the areas were landslides happened in Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Cagayan that resulted to the death and injury of some victims have been identified by the geologists as high risk areas.
"Aside from those areas, there are other parts of the region that we recommended to the LGUs to relocate their constituents residing in the high risk areas. We do hope that they will consider our recommendations to avoid these kinds of tragic incidence," Piligan said.
“One of the reasons of the landslides was the over saturation of the soils caused by the series of heavy downpour of rains brought by the typhoons that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility,” she added.
The LGUs were also advised to look into some mitigation and preparedness measures that they can implement to avoid severity of flooding impacts, especially in the low lying areas of the region.
Piligan further encouraged LGUs and other concerned agencies to consider the study of the Japan International Cooperation Agency to widen the portions of the Cagayan River that are already narrowing. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
