SAN FERNANDO CITY, Nov. 23 (PIA) – The Region 1 Advocates for Gender Development (RAGE-1) will commence the annual observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) with a kick-off activity on November 25.

A forum which will inform the representatives of the different regional line agencies on the functions of Barangay VAW Desks and its role in responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV)-related situations in the community will be conducted.

Creating awareness on importance of mental health, role of Commission on Human Rights (CHR) as a Gender Ombud, and brief orientation on the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995 are also included among the topics to be discussed during the event.

“Women’s right to live free from violence shall always be uphold, RAGE 1 remains steadfast to advocate for ending violence, increase awareness of the causes and consequences of violence and build capacity of partners to prevent and respond to violence,” Perla Sotelo, RAGE-1 president, said.

She adds, “With the increasing advocacy campaign activities of our association through the engagement and commitment of our member agencies in the region, we can help promote continuously the need for changing norms and behavior of men and boys, and advocate for gender equality and women’s rights.”

Maximizing the platforms of both traditional and online media, RAGE-1 is also taping the Philippine Information Agency for two radio episodes over MyFM in La Union and the Commission on Population and Development (Popcom) for their online talk show dubbed ‘Beshytaktakan’ (Best friend chats) to disseminate information on VAW-related services that people can access and avail.

Meanwhile, the Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC) of the Regional Development Council in the Ilocos will conduct a webinar for government employees and members of the academe on November 26 on the role of CHR and the Philippine National Police in the monitoring and response to GBV incidents.

Several regional line agencies and academic institutions are also initiating their own activities as part of the annual observance.

The 18-Day Campaign to End VAW supports the Philippine government's goal of protecting the human rights of women and girls by upholding the commitment to address all forms of GBV.

By virtue of Republic Act 10398 or an act declaring November 25 of every year as the National Consciousness Day for the elimination of VAWC, government agencies raise awareness on the problem of violence and the elimination of all forms of VAWC. (JCR/AMB/JDS/PIA La Union)
