PASIG CITY, Nov. 2 (PIA) --The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said no major flooding was reported on the streets of Metro Manila following the downpour brought by typhoon “Rolly,” which can be attributed to the agency’s flood control measures.
MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said all pumping stations were operational which resulted in zero major flooding in the metropolis since Saturday.
“In anticipation of the onslaught of typhoon “Rolly” in Metro Manila, we made sure that all our pumping stations are working properly so that flood water recedes quickly,” said Lim, during an inspection of various pumping stations today. Among the pumping stations inspected are Hagonoy, Taguig, Labasan, and Napindan.
Lim said one of the major challenges in operating the pumping stations is the volume of garbage and water hyacinth along the waterways which clog the agency’s facilities.
Flood control personnel have collected sofas, flat tires, broken appliances and other sorts of trash which trap the machinery and therefore decrease the efficiency of the pumping stations.
The MMDA operates and maintains 64 pumping stations consisting of 29 large pumping stations, 19 small pumping stations and 16 relief pumping stations in strategic locations in the metropolis.
Lim directed the Metropolitan Public Safety Office (MPSO) to address the water hyacinth problem along the Pasig River and pumping stations. At present, the MMDA collects high volume of water hyacinth along the river using trash skimmer, backhoe and trash boats.
Another flood control measure is the conduct of regular clean-up activities along drainages and waterways despite the coronavirus disease pandemic and even before the onset of the rainy season.
Over the weekend, Lim ordered the agency’s Incident Management Team to monitor the movement of the typhoon, as well as flood-prone and low-lying areas in Metro Manila.
Since Saturday, frontline personnel and emergency vehicles were placed on standby for immediate deployment to mitigate flooding, conduct road clearing operations, quick response and rescue, traffic management and other services to cushion the effects of the typhoon. (MMDA/PIA-NCR)
