TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Nov. 4 (PIA) - - - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office No. 2 recently launched the improved nutritious golden Enhanced Nutribun via Zoom which will benefit over 25,000 daycare pupils from the 26 pilot municipalities.
During the virtual launching, the DOST headed by Regional Director Sancho Mabborang, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) headed by Regional Program Coordinator Ma. Gisela Lonzaga, the DSWD represented by Assistant Regional Director Lucia Alan, and the Department of Education (DepEd) represented by Assistant Regional Director Jessie Amin, inked a Memorandum of Agreement for the implementation of the ‘Laking Enhanced Nutribun’.
Mabborang said the Enhanced Nutribun is one of the DOST-FNRI’s answers to the call of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Memorandum Circular No. 12 Series of 2020, or the Guidelines in the Implementation of the Supplementary Feeding Program During Community Quarantine or Other Similar Emergencies.
He added that the Enhanced Nutribun has more micronutrients like iron and vitamin A and its texture is softer and weighs 160- 165 grams per piece, which is easier for children to hold and bite.
Each serving of Enhanced Nutribun weighing 160-165 grams per piece, has 504 calories, 17.8 grams protein, 6.08 milligrams iron and 244 micrograms vitamin A.
For her part, Alan said there are already 26 local government units that committed to support the production of the Enhanced Nutribun thru licensee bakeshops.
These LGUs include: Aparri, Buguey, Camalaniugan, Lal-lo, Sta. Teresita, Rizal, Sto. Niño, Piat, Enrile, Amulung, Peñablanca, Solana, Tuao and Tuguegarao City, all in Cagayan; Cabatuan, San Mateo, Ramon, Aurora and Luna in Isabela; Cabarroguis and Saguday in Quirino; Aritao, Bambang and Bayombong in Nueva Vizcaya; and Basco and Mahatao in Batanes.
Alan added that a total of P7,777,125 is alloted for the production in the pilot areas.
On the other hand, Lonzaga of the NNC said their office will assign personnel to facilitate liaison works to coordinate with the DOST, DepEd, DSWD and the concerned LGUs.
“We will also step up our dissemination efforts to promote the enhanced nutribun to the local government units,” added Lonzaga.
With the reformulation of the bread of the 70s, the Nutribun, Lonzaga is hopeful that the malnutrition status in the region would significantly decrease.
She lauded the 26 pilot LGUs for their commitment to improve the nutritional status of their schoolchildren and urged other LGUs to do the same.
Amin, for his part, lauded the DOST for its initiative to have a reformulated version of the nutribun.
The DepEd official urged licensee bakeshops to follow the standards of the DOST so that the purpose will not be defeated. (MDCT/PIA-2)
