TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Nov. 23 (PIA) - - Senator Sherwin Gatchalian expressed his support to the recommendations of local officials to dredge the Cagayan River to cushion the impact of flooding during rainy seasons.

During his visit in the province on Saturday, Gatchalian said desilting of the river beds is necessary to deepen the waterways to avoid swelling of the river which causes severe flooding in the low-lying areas.

“It should not be done only every 10 years or every 12 years, dredging should be maintained and be done regularly. Dredging should be done annually,” he said.

He also recommended the development of water impounding projects to catch excess waters from the mountains during rainy season and whenever there are heavy downpour of rains,

Another impounding facility at the Magat Dam reservoir could be developed according to the senator.

“The excess water become waste water because there are no impounding facilities for excess waters. They go down to the river directly. If not, this eventuality will just be repeated in the near future,” he said.

In his visit, he personally turned-over rice donations amounting to P2.2 million from Valenzuela City government and worth P1 million from him.

He also gave face masks, face shields and slippers for the victims of flooding in the province which were personally accepted by Governor Manuel Mamba. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
