‘BION help disseminate information on Covid-19,’ says Mahayag mayor

MAHAYAG, Zamboanga del Sur, Dec. 27, 2020 (PIA) - The local government of Mahayag has given great importance on the role of the Barangay Information Officers' Network (BION) in disseminating true information to the barangay.

BION is an initiative of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) that employs the services of barangay information officers to help maximize the dissemination of information and advocacy efforts made by the government.

In the recent municipal launching and orientation, Mayor Manuel Saladaga said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the help of BION is very much needed to inform the relevant information of their respective barangays.

“BION can provide great help in informing the real information especially in the farthest barangays in Mahayag town. They are also the reliable source of information because they were chosen as officials in their barangays, ”said Saladaga.

Saladaga said that during the restrictions and health protocols implemented by the National Inter-Agency Task Force and the Department of Health (DOH), there were some residents who did not comply with the order, thus causing problems to the frontliners.

The mayor specifically mentioned the failure to comply with some Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROFs) and locally stranded individuals (LSIs) in the guidelines in accepting them by LGU officials to enter their town.

Due to this situation, Saladaga said that BION's help is very much needed to strengthen the dissemination of barangay information and provide a solution to the people's problem.

The Mayor added that when the provincial government, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) launched BION, without hesitation he immediately supported it by launching it in their town, allocating fund, and provide free venue to participants.

Meanwhile, Josephine Damalerio, municipal local government operations officer (MLGOO) said the birth of BION is a commendable step taken by the government as it empowers barangay officials to inform the community of the efforts made by the national government.

"Through BION, the people of the barangay can engage in all aspects of good governance and transparency in delivering accurate information to the people," Damalerio said.

The 29 full-pledged BION members were also ordered to submit their weekly accomplishment report to their municipal information officer and report the incidents and problems in their respective barangays so that the government can take immediate action on their problems.
