ILOILO CITY, Dec. 14 (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas enjoined the populace in Region 6 to refrain from purchasing pork products online as a measure to avert any infestation of the African swine fever (ASF) in the region.
Engr. Remelyn Recoter, DA-6 regional director, said that Western Visayas still remains as an ASF-free region.
“We enjoin the Region 6 populace to refrain from online buying of pork products as we are not sure where these sources are coming from,” she said.
She said that there were attempts to bring in processed pork products from Luzon but these were thwarted due to the vigilance of the local governments units here.
DA-6, through the Bureau of Animal Industry Veterinary Quarantine Division, also encouraged online sellers to avoid importing or selling pork or processed meat such as ham from ASF-affected areas.
Recoter added that majority of the swine industry here comprises backyard raisers and this move will the public to protect their livelihood. (JSC/LTP/PIA6 Iloilo)
