Media sector lauded for public awareness efforts

SAN JOSE, Antique, Dec. 4 (PIA) -- Members of the press in the province of Antique were commended for their effective information dissemination efforts in this time of pandemic.

Addressing media practitioners in a media conference, lawyer Roy Villa, former regional Inter Agency Task Force on COVID-19 spokesperson, said that communication and correct information are equally vital in winning the battle against the contagious virus.

“Our media people are frontliners in their own rights. They are keys into building the needed public awareness about COVID-19,” Villa said.

He noted that these health protocols, policies and endeavors of the government are conveyed through print, television, radio platforms and even social media for wider dissemination.

Villa, who is also the current Philippine National Railways Board of Director, regarded the fourth estate as guardians and soldiers against fake news, misinformation and disinformation.

Fake news, according to him, may sow public confusion and ultimately bring public chaos and disorder.

Meanwhile, the province of Antique, was recognized for having the best record in Western Visayas in terms of the lowest single digit number of active cases of COVID-19.

Villa said that this feat is attributed to a solid and cohesive approach of Antique in the fight against COVID-19 in which the government and the public have been working hand in hand.

For her part, House Deputy Speaker and Antique Lone District Representative Loren Legarda conveyed how Antique can be an example of carrying out a sustainable recovery in the midst of a health crisis.

“If there is political peace, cooperation and support between the provincial government, LGUs and the congressional district office, we could help our people and that is happening now. And when the media understands the problem, communicates it clearly to our people, then the people are helped,” Legarda said. (LTP/LML-PIA6 Antique)
