SAAD project enriches E. Samar swine breeding production

BORONGAN CITY, Dec. 2 (PIA) – The Special Areas for Agricultural Development (SAAD) under the Department of Agriculture is enriching the province's swine breeding production.

According to Antonio Luceres, focal person of SAAD E. Samar, on November 26, two farmers’ association in Arteche town in Brgy. Carapdapan and Barangay Catumsan received 10 gilts with 20 bags of hog grower feed each association to ensure that the gilts do not suffer malnutrition.

They also delivered another 10 sets of gilts to the farmers association in Brgy. Japitan and Brgy. 14 in Dolores town with the same number of hog grower feeds.

In Brgy. Vigan and Aguinaldo in Gen. MacArthur, and in Brgy. Bagte in Quinapondan, the SAAD team also delivered the same set of assistance.

The farmers association did not only receive the gilts, feeds but also medicines and antibiotics and technical assistance from the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian headed by Dr. Norma Ylanan to ensure that the gilts will produce healthy offspring, Luceres added.

Ylanan said that the provision of the feeds is good for the first cycle or until the gilts' delivery.

With the infusion of the swine breeding production in strategic areas in the north and southern part of the province, the SAAD program with the provincial government hopes that the supply of meat will be enough.

"We will not have to import pork anymore, and this will provide income to poor families who are members of the farmers' associations, " said Luceres.

The project worth P5,967,395 for the seven farmers groups will roll out to other beneficiaries, said Luceres.

Piglets that will be produced later will be dispersed to other farmers for the same purpose.

Liezelda Carin, an officer of the Japitan SAAD Farmers Association thanked the DA and the Provincial Government for the assistance. She said she will encourage her members to take care of the investment as this will also help their families. (nbq/PIA E. Samar)
