8,390 OFWs in R12 get AKAP cash aid from gov’t

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Jan 29 (PIA) – Over 8,000 displaced and stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Soccsksargen already received cash aid from the government under the Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP) program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

In PIA 12’s Performing and Informing program, OWWA 12 Regional Director Marilou Sumalinog reported that they already released a total of P83.9 million pesos to 8,390 OFW recipients in the region since the program started last year.

“Our portal is still open. We are continue to process and evaluate applications of those who already arrived in the country,” Sumalinog said.

Under the program, the OFW-beneficiary will receive a one-time cash aid amounting to P10,000 or $200 cash assistance.

Covered by the program are OFWs repatriated and stranded in the country due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Meanwhile, RD Sumalinog also reported that they assisted more than 20,000 returning OFWs back to their home provinces under the Balik Probinsya Program.

The official also advised OFWs and their families to visit Public OFW Desk Officers in their respective local government units to inquire and avail of OWWA’s programs and services. (ORVRivera)
