CABARROGUIS, Quirino, Jan. 5 (PIA)— After President Rodrigo Duterte issued a directive to the Department of Education (DepEd) suspending plans to hold face-to-face classes in select schools nationwide, Governor Dax Cua said Local Government Unit (LGU) executives are collectively heaving a sigh of relief.
Cua, who heads the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) admitted that LGU chiefs were wary about holding pilot face-to-face classes in their jurisdictions even in areas with few Covid-19 cases.
“Many of us were concerned about plans to hold face-to-face classes since it is impossible to 100% guarantee the safety of our schoolchildren,” said Cua.
Earlier, Cua in his regular Governor’s Hour radio/online program, said that he will ask a reconsideration to DepEd to exclude Quirino in the pilot testing of face to face classes.
He also planned to hold a dialogue with the DepEd Quirino personnel to get their official position and he will also solicit the support of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for the proposal.
“As a parent, I am extremely reluctant to expose my child to the risk of infection, no matter how minimal, and a great majority of my constituents feel the same way, too,” the governor said.
Cua pointed out that the current Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases guidelines prohibiting minors from leaving their homes, to prevent them from catching and spreading the Covid-19 virus should apply to face-to-face classes as well. (ALM/TCB/PIA Quirino)
