NAVAL, Biliran, Feb. 3 (PIA) -- As African Swine Fever (ASF) recently hits three Leyte towns, and pork supply became scarce and expensive, the Biliran Municipal Agriculture Office controlled the prices of live hogs and pork meat in their town.
During the provincial public hearing on ASF mitigation, Lemuel Antonio, Biliran Municipal Agriculture Officer, disclosed their office controls prices of live hogs from local hog raisers as well as prices of pork sold in the market.
If live hogs are sold at P100 per kilo, pork has to be sold of up to P200 per kilo in the market. If live hogs are at P120 per kilo, then pork has to be sold of up to P240.00 per kilo in the market. Or price of pork in the market only doubles that of the price of the live hog, Antonio said.
Antonio said, the controlled prices are fair enough for the raisers, the sellers, and the consumers.
Prevailing prices of lean pork in the markets within Biliran province ranges from P200 - P240 per kilo while in Metro Manila, it has reached to as high as P400 per kilo over the news due to the scarcity of hog supply in Luzon
Biliran province remains sufficient and even has excess in supply at present thus prices of pork and its by-products remain as is, according to Dr. Suzette Apura, provincial veterinarian
But with the threat of the confirmed ASF cases in Abuyog, La Paz, and Javier in Leyte, there is a possibility of shortage in the offing.
To prevent the possible entry and spread of ASF in the province of Biliran, Governor Rogelio Espina issued Executive Order No. 001, Series of 2021, amending certain provisions of Executive Order No. 007, Series of 2020, imposing total ban on the entry to Biliran province live hogs, pork, and by-products from Luzon and Mindanao, and the nearby provinces of Samar, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte.
