QUEZON CITY, Feb. 7 (PIA) - The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, the Provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi, and the Provincial Tourism office discussed the potential of Tawi-Tawi for the promotion of Halal Tourism, a growing market segment with tourists seeking destinations which meet their needs, permissible in accordance with Islamic teaching, in terms of diet, dress or rituals.
It was agreed that 'qiblah' (direction Muslims face during prayer) markers or signages will be placed in all hotel rooms in the Municipality of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.
The project coincides with the opening of the tourist spot Sangay Siapuh Island Resort located at Ubol, Simunul, Tawi-Tawi which is accessible from Bongao for day trips and swimming via a 30-minute ride on a 'lepa' (a native term for boat). Sangay Siapo is a remote island with nearby sites ideal for snorkeling or diving. MCG/PIA-IDPD/NCMF)
