QUEZON CITY, Mar. 6 (PIA) -- The University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) asks for additional 3,000 Sinovac vaccines for their personnel as many had themselves vaccinated more than what was on the initial list, said Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque Jr. during the March 4 press briefing.
Initially, only 1,200 UP-PGH frontline healthcare workers had their names included in the vaccination priority list, he added.
UP-PGH COVID Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nurse-III Mai Anne Del Monte of the Philippine General was vaccinated on the first day of roll-out shared in the same briefing that she herself got vaccinated because she know that the vaccine can help protect her from COVID-19.
"Bilang COVID ICU Nurse po, araw araw kong nakikita na nahihirapan at namamatay ang mga pasyente na nagkakaroon lalo na ng severe corona virus disease. Nung nalaman ko po na meron nang available na bakuna, hindi na po ako nag hesitate na kumuha nito dahil alam ko po mapoprotektahan ako nito laban sa sakit na ito. (As a COVID ICU Nurse, I see patients suffering and dying especially those who die of severe corona virus disease. So when I learned that the vaccine was already available, I did not hesitate to get vaccinated because I know that this will protect me against the disease)," Del Monte shared.
As a public health advocate, she knows it is of great help if everyone agrees to get vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, and for everyone to get protected.
She also shared that what probably prompted other healthworkers in PGH to get vaccinated is because they saw that the vaccine is safe and has been studied and evaluated by DOH and the government.
Thus, her advice to health workers to grab the opportunity to get vaccinated with whatever vaccine is readily available because this is their chance for them to get protected from the virus, as well as their family and the whole community.
During the vaccination roll out last Monday, UP-PGH Director Dr. Gerardo “Gap” Legaspi, and Dr. Edsel Salvaña, Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at UP-National Institutes of Health, were among top medical personnel to get vaccinated in an effort meant to boost public confidence in vaccination.
